Scotland Yard (also known as New Scotland Yard, or Yard) is the headquarters of the London Metropolitan Police (Metropolitan Police Service). The name derives from its former location on Great Scotland Yard, a street located in Whitehall. The exact origin of the name is unknown, but according to one hypothesis, the site was the diplomatic mission of the kings of Scotland before the Union of 1707 between England and Scotland. Another possibility is that during the Middle Ages, the site belonged to a man named Scott,or maybe stagecoaches departed to Scotland from this street.
As it is most often heard in the movies and series it is good to know a little bit about it!
