Mother Earth

Wednesday, 21 April 2010

It's up to us to do something and small gestures are important. In the end the planet is where we live and we've been too careless.
The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. The world is invited to take action in 2010 to safeguard the variety of life on earth: biodiversity

The Lion King

It’s impossible not to remember this movie and it’s also impossible not to remember Timon e Pumba, this brilliant set.
This movie makes me remember my childhood. I miss that time.
One of my favourite parts of this movie it’s this one, it’s so hilarious and I want to share this with all of you. I want to give you a little part of my childhood.
I’ve chosen the Portuguese version because I think that it’s funnier.
I know that this doesn't have anything to do with the themes of our classes but I think that these little things of our past make us who we are now and, because of that, I think that it's important to share it.
Enjoy.

Queen - an addiction

Friday, 16 April 2010

This is my father's favourite band, Queen. I grew up listenig to their music and now I have the need to listen to  some of their music every day. Now, I want to share this passion with you.
This video shows us one of the most famous musics that they have made and it shows us the incomparable voice of Freddy Mercury. Despite having died for almost nineteen years, his voice is still apreciated all over the world. True legends never die, right?

Consequences of consumerism - "Madonna - Get stupid remix"

Hello everybody! As you all know, at the English class we are working the topic “Consumerism”.
This is a video from Madonna. At one of her concerts included in the “Sticky and Sweet Tour” she performed this video, which is a remix from one of her musics. She has the habit to always perform a remix of one of her songs with the purpose to show people some of her concerns.
I know that many people don’t particularly like her songs, but I thought that this one would help many of us, (students), to see what are the consequences of consumerism, and that it could make it easier for us to speak in class about this topic.
Hope you like it!
(By the way, if you like Madonna you have to see the DVD of her “Sticky and Sweet Tour”, in Argentina. It’s AWESOME!)

Manchester - sharing my memories

Wednesday, 14 April 2010

The university of Manchester where I worked and got my PhD. It was a great time of my life

I lived here for seven years. It is Ashburne Hall where I was a tutor. Afterwards, I decided I wanted to move on and I shared  a rented house with a small garden.

Just to think about....

Monday, 12 April 2010

Here is a wonderful poem by Emily Dickinson, the reclusive volcano, who died in Amherst Massachusetts in 1886. She was 54. None of her work was published in her lifetime.

Much madness is divinest sense
To a discerning eye;
Much sense the starkest madness.
Tis the majority
In this, as all, prevails.
Assent, and you are sane;
Demur, -- you're straightway dangerous,
And handled with a chain.

Haiti

Friday, 9 April 2010

In the second period we had to do our oral evaluation. For that, teacher Ligia Silva told us that the theme could be anything.
Our group chose Haiti because we wanted to attract the attention of the students for this issue.
We made a short video and now we want to share it with you and share, also, some curiosities.
Enjoy!
Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas. In political terms it is a presidential republic with a president and an elected National Assembly. The constitution was introduced in 1987 and modeled on the constitutions of the United States of America and France. It was partially or completely suspended for a few years, but returned to full force in 1994.
In cultural and social terms, it is a country that was heavily influenced by France.
Today its economy is shattered and in ruins. The country remains extremely poor, 45.2% of the population is illiterate and life expectancy is only 60.9 years.
The two official languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole. They also speak Spanish but it is not an official language.
On 12 January 2010, Haiti was devastated by an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude. Thousands of people died and many others were left without their homes and their businesses.
Haiti became a country beyond recognition in that rich and poor, now are forced to struggle together.

A precious voice, a great woman - Nina Simone

Nina Simone was blessed with a wonderful and unique voice and when I read her biography I was amazed with what she had to go through. Apart from being a very good pianist, with influences from Bach, she was and is one of the greatest voices in the world and through her songs she fought for the civil rights of the negroes. I had the chance to see her in concert in Manchester and it was awe-inspiring. One of my favourite songs is "I loves you porggy".

Alien like you

Tuesday, 6 April 2010

Before the Easter holidays we were talking about discrimination and homophobia. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is increasing in our society.
I love this song and the lyrics is absolutely amazing. I hope it will be as inspiring for you as it is for me.
Thanks and I hope you like it! :)

Alien like you

I know what you're feeling
It's hard to believe in
That home must be millions and millions of light-years away
So let the stars align
And let the water make wine
Because broken souls will become whole tonight
We know it's right so

Lift your eyes and let me in
Because baby, I'm an alien like you
Will you ever wake at night and realize the
Reason why you knew me then
Is maybe I'm an alien too
Will you ever let me be an alien with you

Aren't you tired of running
From what you're becoming
The truth is it's useless there's nowhere to go, it's not going to find you,
So let the heavens flare
And let's not be scared, because
We know love's a world above this one
It's like the sun so

Lift your eyes and let me in
Because baby I'm an alien like you
Will you ever let me be an alien with you?

Well, the days of solitude are gone
Because we've both spent a way too long
Hearing voices on the radio
And we can't let anybody know

Lift your eyes and let me in
Because baby I'm an alien like you
Will you ever wake at night an realize the
Reason why you knew me then
It is maybe because I'm an alien too
Will you ever let me be an alien...
...With you
